Karen Morimoto, BA, JD
Barrister, Solicitor & Notary Public

Professional Profile

Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Politics, from Queen’s University and a Law Clerk diploma from Fleming College. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Karen worked as a law clerk in Toronto gaining experience both on Bay Street and in international arbitration at the World Bank. She obtained her Juris Doctor degree from Osgoode Hall in 2010. While at Osgoode, Karen received specialized training in dispute mediation and served as executive assistant to the Osgoode Innocence Project. Karen was called to the Bar in 2011; she currently practices corporate law, wills & estates, estate litigation, and real estate law.

Extracurriculars

Karen founded Mulberry Law, bringing together a collective of skilled legal professionals with diverse experiences and wide-ranging personalities. One thing they all agree on – Grilled Cheese Law was a close second for the firm name but ruled out in an effort to be inclusive and welcoming to our lactose intolerant clients. Karen lacks real hobbies, owing to her office-centric inclinations (she does occasionally take out her technology related frustrations on unsuspecting garden weeds). While Karen, in her professional life, is excessively friendly and talks more than any other living human, in her personal life, she avoids all activities that require her to leave her house, opting to hibernate with her equally reclusive husband and daughter. Karen dreams of winning the lottery to spend her days lounging and drinking beer (specifically IPAs) with tiny cocktail umbrellas and a side of Skittles (which she insists go well together). But probably still at home.

Honours & Awards

Governor General’s Academic Medal

Nikki Lewis, BA, JD
Barrister, Solicitor & Notary Public

Professional Profile

Nikki attended Carleton University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology. She then attended the University of Ottawa, where she obtained her Juris Doctor degree. Nikki began her legal career in Ottawa with her practice focusing on criminal law and child protection matters. After returning to her Burlington roots, Nikki began working with Karen and now practices primarily in real estate and wills & estates law.

Extracurriculars

Always outfitted head to toe in black, Nikki describes her style as boardroom gothic chic. She lives with her three pet rats, who she insists are very cuddly. Like Karen, Nikki also lacks hobbies. Occasionally, Mulberry Law will act on real estate matters with rodent issues or other pest-control concerns. Despite being a consummate professional, we know Nikki is secretly rooting for the rodents.

Jeanine Garlow, Office Manager

Staff Profile

Jeanine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University and a Human Resources Post Graduate Diploma from Humber College. Jeanine’s primary hobby is worrying. She hates taking days off, despite Karen insisting she do so. Jeanine enjoys playing with Excel spreadsheets and needles (crochet, to be specific), despite that she is well below retirement age.

Janice Otterstein, Law Clerk

Staff Profile

With decades of experience as an estates, corporate, and estate litigation clerk, Janice joined Mulberry Law to do anything but real estate (seriously – she has nightmares about it). Janice is an avid traveler and tequila aficionado with zero ability to say no to her grandchildren. Over the past decade, Karen had become utterly dependent on Janice for everything and makes regular threats about Janice’s inability to retire or leave Mulberry Law before she does. The witness protection program is already aware and on standby.

Linda De Canhas, Law Clerk

Staff Profile

Linda has been working as a real estate law clerk for over forty years. She drinks several litres of coffee a day but is still always tired, likely because she has the dietary habits of a kid at a birthday party (her husband makes her lunches and cuts the crusts off her peanut butter sandwiches). Linda loves Christmas with a gleeful passion but also relates strongly to the Grinch for non-holiday matters.

Lisa Campbell, Law Clerk

Staff Profile

Lisa has over thirty years’ experience as a real estate law clerk. While being arguably the most laid-back member of the Mulberry staff, Lisa’s face has absolutely no ability to hide what she’s thinking – which is one of the reasons she works remotely. Lisa loves traveling and spoiling her grandchildren; she reluctantly goes for power walks on her lunch break because she really likes potato chips.

Sarah Camm, Conveyancer

Staff Profile

Sarah received her Bachelor of Arts in Classical Studies and her Masters of Library and Information Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. Known as the firm’s title search guru, Sarah is brought in as the “big guns” when complex title issues arise. Sarah works remotely in the middle of nowhere and enjoys reading, knitting, embroidery, and is everyone’s favourite dance mom.

Kevin Morimoto, Intake Clerk

Staff Profile

Kevin attended Carleton University and completed his Bachelor of Arts studies in computer science. Possibly the most introverted member of Team Mulberry, Kevin’s social life consists mainly of entertaining his niece (his real boss) and sending emoji responses to his co-workers. Kevin is Karen’s younger brother and is consequently chronically underpaid.

Basher Garlow, Junior Office Manager

Staff Profile

Basher is a Shih Tzu who has won employee of the month since his adoption despite his poor manners – very friendly, no chill.
